Truck Driver Jailed For Life Over Killing Of FRSC Marshal In Lagos

One reckless moment behind the wheel can end a life, and change many others forever.

A Lagos High Court has sentenced truck driver Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi to life imprisonment for killing an FRSC officer on active duty during a routine traffic operation in Orile-Iganmu in November 2023.

The court ruled that the driver’s actions were grossly negligent and unlawful, rejecting any claim that the fatal crash was an accident.

Investigations showed the 40-foot container-laden truck was driven at excessive speed before slamming into a stationary mini truck under inspection, crushing Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Ajomale, who later died from his injuries.

The conviction for involuntary manslaughter, delivered on 14 January 2026, has been described by the FRSC as a landmark judgment for road safety enforcement.

Reacting, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the ruling sends a clear warning to motorists, especially heavy-duty vehicle operators, that recklessness on Nigeria’s roads will attract severe consequences.

He added that the Corps will intensify enforcement and prosecutions to curb dangerous driving, while honouring the fallen officer whose death underscores the daily risks faced by road safety personnel.
