Night Inferno In Plateau: Mother Loses Six Children In Mangu Fire Tragedy

What began as a quiet night in Mangu, Plateau State, ended in unspeakable grief as a raging fire tore through a family home, claiming the lives of six young siblings and leaving their mother severely injured.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday around the old Mangu Market in Mangu Local Government Area.

The victims, children aged between four months and 12 years, were confirmed dead by a spokesperson of the family of Malam Sanusi Maifaci.

Recounting the ordeal, the children’s uncle, Umar Basbangida Aliyu, said the fire broke out at about 2:00 a.m. after the family had retired for the night.

According to him, the mother and her nine children had stayed up watching television until around 11:00 p.m., after which the three male children went to sleep, leaving the mother with the six younger ones.

He explained that although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, there was electricity supply before they went to bed.

By the time neighbours were alerted around 2:30 a.m., the house had already been engulfed in flames.

“The mother struggled desperately to rescue her children but could not,” Aliyu said, adding that she sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Allah Nakowa Hospital in Mangu.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and the Chairman of Mangu Local Government Area visited the bereaved family to commiserate with them, with the governor pledging support towards rebuilding the destroyed home.

Aliyu also praised the community for its unity, noting that Muslims and Christians came out in large numbers to help during the emergency.
