Nigeria Deepens Road Safety Reform With New Global Partnership

Nigeria has taken a major step towards safer road travel as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sealed a landmark National Licence Agreement with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), formally establishing the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP).

The move signals a renewed national commitment to tackling the high rate of road crashes by adopting globally recognised safety assessment standards.

The agreement, signed on 18 November 2025 during the International Road Crash Victims Africa Conference in Abuja, was later presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

Under the partnership, FRSC will deploy iRAP’s advanced road safety assessment tools and star-rating system to identify risks on Nigerian roads and guide targeted interventions.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s ambition to cut road fatalities by half before 2030, in line with the Second UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and global performance benchmarks.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the agreement as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to safer roads. “This agreement further demonstrates our dedication to making Nigerian roads safer for all users.

We are proud to present this achievement to Mr President and look forward to achieving our shared vision of a safer road transportation network,” he said.

iRAP CEO Greg Smith, represented by Nathalie Chiavassa, welcomed Nigeria as the fourth African country to join the programme, commending FRSC’s proactive efforts.

President Tinubu, through the SGF, applauded the initiative, noting that improved road safety remains central to national development and economic growth.

The partnership is expected to accelerate reforms, enhance road engineering standards, and ultimately protect millions of road users across the country.
