New ECOWAS Headquarters 85% Complete, Vice President Pushes For Swift Delivery
With regional integration gaining greater urgency amid emerging political and economic challenges, the ECOWAS Commission is racing against time to complete its new headquarters, an ambitious complex expected to strengthen coordination and efficiency across West Africa.
During a working visit to the construction site, the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, expressed cautious optimism about the pace of work while urging the contractor to accelerate efforts towards timely delivery.
According to technical briefings from officials of the Directorates of Transport and Administration & General Services, the project has achieved approximately 85% completion, with arrangements already in place to fast-track the remaining 15%.
While excessive rainfall and several site-related challenges caused delays, particularly on external works, the contractor has since increased its workforce to keep the project on schedule.
Representatives of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, the primary financier of the project, were also present during the inspection.
The Commission used the opportunity to commend the Federal Republic of Nigeria for its significant progress in contracting construction works for the ECOWAS Parliament and the Community Court of Justice.
Tchintchibidja conveyed the Community’s appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support towards strengthening ECOWAS institutions.
She further appealed to the Federal Government, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and its Development Authority to expedite district infrastructure works required to make the new headquarters fully operational.
These include access roads, water and sewage systems, telecommunications, and electricity connections.
As the project nears completion, the new ECOWAS Headquarters stands as a major step towards deeper regional cooperation, bringing hope for a more coordinated and resilient West Africa.
