ECOWAS, Mauritania Move To Boost Regional Data Accuracy With New Statistics Agreement
In a region where reliable data is increasingly becoming the backbone of economic planning, ECOWAS is taking a decisive step to strengthen statistical systems across West and Central Africa.
The Commission has concluded a Memorandum of Understanding with Mauritania to harmonise and improve the quality of statistics that guide development decisions.
The agreement, finalised in Nouakchott on 14 November 2025, will be formally signed at a later date.
It forms part of the World Bank-funded HISWACA project, which seeks to enhance the coherence of data collection and reporting across the region.
Under the MoU, Mauritania will receive technical assistance, capacity-building support, and opportunities for knowledge sharing with ECOWAS member states, an important boost for its integration into regional statistical frameworks.
While in Nouakchott, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dr Kalilou Sylla, held high-level consultations with Mauritanian authorities and key development partners, including ANSADE, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development, FAO, the EU Delegation, and the World Bank.
The discussions focused on deepening cooperation ahead of the forthcoming signing ceremony.
The initiative is expected to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, support regional planning, and ensure that countries share a common statistical language, an essential foundation for long-term growth and integration.
