The Family Of Late Bilyaminu Bello Opposes Presidential Pardon Granted To Maryam Sanda, Labels It “The Worst Injustice Ever”

In a development that has sparked outrage across the country, the family of late Bilyaminu Bello has strongly condemned the presidential pardon granted to Maryam Sanda, the woman convicted of killing her husband in 2017, describing it as “the worst injustice ever.”

The high-profile case, which gripped national attention, saw Sanda sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 after the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court found her guilty of stabbing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death at their Abuja home following a domestic dispute.

The judgment was upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2022, bringing closure to what many saw as a landmark case in Nigeria’s justice system.

However, reports that Sanda was among inmates granted a presidential pardon have reignited public debate on fairness, accountability, and the integrity of Nigeria’s justice system.

Reacting to the development, members of the Bello family expressed shock and disappointment, saying the decision undermines the rule of law and dishonours the memory of their late son.

They called the pardon a “betrayal of justice” and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the decision in the interest of fairness and national morality.

Observers say the controversy has once again exposed tensions between the powers of executive clemency and public expectations for justice, especially in cases involving gender-based violence and domestic homicide.
