INEC Reaffirms Readiness For Anambra Poll As IPAC Demands Credible, Transparent Election

With just weeks to the Anambra governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is fully prepared to deliver a credible poll, having completed 10 out of 13 scheduled activities.

The Commission’s assurance comes as political parties, under the umbrella of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), insist the election will be a test of INEC’s integrity and commitment to democratic standards.

Acting Chairman of INEC, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, speaking at the Commission’s quarterly consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja, said all is set for a smooth exercise.

“INEC has met with security agencies, delivered all non-sensitive materials, and intensified voter education across the state.

We are on schedule and will keep strictly to our timeline,” she stated, warning political parties to respect the November 6 campaign deadline, as no date in the timetable would be shifted.

Agbamuche-Mbu also disclosed that preparations are progressing for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections slated for February 21, 2026, as well as off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

On voter registration, she said the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which resumed in August, would run until August 30, 2026.

According to her, the high turnout recorded so far shows renewed confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The Acting Chairman further revealed that out of 171 groups that applied for registration as political parties, only 14 scaled the initial screening stage, having met constitutional and legal requirements.

IPAC Chairman, Dr Yusuf Dantalle, on his part, urged INEC’s new leadership to ensure the Anambra poll reflects the will of the people, describing it as a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy.

He said Nigerians expect an election that is “credible, transparent, and inclusive, where every vote counts and truly matters.”

Dantalle also called on political actors and stakeholders to work together in strengthening democratic institutions, noting that after 26 years of unbroken democracy, Nigeria should be setting the standard, not struggling to meet it.

“The ongoing Constitution and Electoral Act amendments present another opportunity to deepen democratic governance,” he added, reaffirming IPAC’s commitment to engaging the National Assembly and stakeholders for lasting reforms.
