ASUU Declares Two-Week Warning Strike, Accuses Government Of Insincerity

Nigeria’s ivory towers are once again on edge as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike, accusing the Federal Government of insincerity in ongoing negotiations.

The union’s president, Dr Chris Piwuna, announced the industrial action during a press conference at ASUU’s national secretariat, University of Abuja, on Sunday.

He stated that the strike, which takes effect from midnight, serves as a window for the government to conclude all outstanding negotiations and honour its commitments.

According to Piwuna, the decision followed what ASUU described as the government’s consistent failure to demonstrate genuine commitment to resolving long-standing issues affecting the nation’s universities.

These include poor funding, unpaid academic allowances, and the review of lecturers’ welfare and conditions of service.

“The government has shown a lack of sincerity in addressing our demands.

This warning strike is to give them yet another opportunity to act responsibly and prioritise education,” Piwuna said.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across the education sector, with students and parents expressing concern over the potential disruption to the academic calendar.

Many are urging both parties to return to the negotiation table to avert a full-blown shutdown of public universities.

As the two-week countdown begins, the nation watches closely to see if the government will seize the opportunity to resolve the lingering impasse or risk yet another prolonged crisis in Nigeria’s higher education system.
