Over a year after the brutal murder of 69-year-old Mrs Obianuju Akubi in Umuleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested the prime suspect, bringing a major breakthrough in the long-standing case.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed in a statement that operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, apprehended 46-year-old Obadigbo Emmanuel Anumudu on 4th October 2025 in Aguleri, following credible intelligence.

According to Ikenga, the suspect had been on the run since July 2024 after he allegedly murdered and beheaded the elderly woman.

During interrogation, Anumudu reportedly confessed to the crime and identified other members of his gang who participated in the killing.

He also revealed the location of the victim’s severed head, which had been taken away after the incident.

The Police said intensive efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and ensure justice is served.

The Command urged residents to continue providing useful information to assist investigations and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and order across the state.
