IPC Demands Probe Into Killing Of Arise News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu

The International Press Centre (IPC) has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the killing of Arise News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who died following an armed attack in Abuja.

Maduagwu, who anchored and produced programmes on the channel, was attacked in the early hours of 29 September 2025 at Unique Apartments, Katampe. Reports indicate that up to 15 armed men stormed the compound, raiding all 16 flats.

Despite distress calls, police failed to respond, while relatives later alleged she was denied prompt treatment at Maitama District Hospital because staff demanded her identification.

Lanre Arogundade, IPC’s Executive Director, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable.

“We demand a thorough, independent investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible. Failure to act only fuels impunity, threatens press freedom and endangers democracy,” he said.

The centre noted that Maduagwu’s death follows a disturbing pattern of violence against journalists in Nigeria.

At least 45 attacks on reporters were recorded in 2024 alone, with most cases unresolved.

IPC urged the Nigeria Police and Federal Government to act decisively, while also calling for urgent reforms in the country’s emergency response and healthcare systems.

It extended condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues, and the management of Arise News.
