IGP Hosts ECONEC Delegation, Reaffirms Police Neutrality In Nigeria’s Electoral Process
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has restated the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to neutrality, professionalism, and fairness in the country’s electoral processes.
The IGP made this known while receiving a high-level delegation from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The visit, was part of ongoing dialogues aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral security architecture ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Led by Mrs Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Liberia, the delegation also included senior electoral officials from Ghana, Nigeria, and the ECOWAS sub-region.
Discussions centred around key issues raised in the 2023 elections report and strategies for implementing its recommendations.
Speaking during the meeting, the IGP outlined the Police’s critical role in the electoral cycle from maintaining peace during campaigns, to securing materials and polling stations on election day, and managing post-election disputes.
“We remain fully committed to our constitutional responsibility of securing the electoral process while maintaining absolute impartiality,” IGP Egbetokun said, noting that the Police had received encouraging feedback from both local and international observers in recent polls.
Mrs Lansanah, on behalf of ECONEC, commended the Nigerian Police for their pivotal role in ensuring credible elections and expressed optimism about deepening collaboration with security agencies across the region.
The meeting marks another step towards reinforcing democracy through stakeholder engagement and cross-border learning.
