EU Denies Cutting Humanitarian Aid For Food Crisis In Nigeria
The European Union has firmly refuted claims suggesting it had made “massive cuts” to humanitarian support tackling Nigeria’s growing food and nutrition crisis.
The clarification follows a press release issued on 25 July by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which initially alleged that the EU, among other international donors, had significantly reduced aid.
However, the EU Delegation to Nigeria has dismissed the claim as “unsubstantiated and inaccurate.”
In a statement released in Abuja, the Delegation explained that its humanitarian assistance through the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) in the first half of 2025 remains consistent with its 2024 support, with additional funding top-ups underway.
Like previous years, a substantial share of this aid is targeted at emergency nutrition, health, and food assistance particularly for vulnerable communities in northern Nigeria.
The EU welcomed MSF’s revised statement, which removed the reference to EU funding cuts.
It also acknowledged the lifesaving work of MSF teams, some of whom receive EU backing, as witnessed during the EU Ambassador’s recent visit to Sokoto State.
Reiterating the importance of fact-based communication, the EU Delegation emphasised that misinformation could undermine efforts to address the ongoing emergency.
It joined the Nigerian government and other partners in calling for increased domestic and international resources to tackle worsening malnutrition in the North-East and North-West regions.
“The EU is standing by its financial commitments and continues to be a strong partner in supporting the people of Nigeria,” the statement said.
