Betara Bags WINSEC Grand Award As NAWOJ Unveils Women In Security Summit
Recognising the role of women in building safer societies took centre stage in Abuja as the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) launched its maiden Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026, honouring outstanding individuals driving peace, security and national development.
A major highlight of the event, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, was the presentation of the Outstanding Legislative of National Security and Community Development Award to the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rt. Hon. Mukhtar Betara Aliyu.
The award recognised his leadership, commitment to national development and support for initiatives promoting peace, good governance and women’s empowerment.
Speaking at the summit, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aishatu Ibrahim, described WINSEC as a landmark achievement in the association’s 38-year history, stressing that lasting peace and national security can only be achieved through the active inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making.
She said the initiative was created to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of women serving in the military, police, intelligence agencies, correctional services, journalism, humanitarian organisations and community peace-building efforts.
Hajia Ibrahim also highlighted the acquisition of land and a Certificate of Occupancy for NAWOJ’s permanent national secretariat as another milestone of her administration, noting that the facility would serve as a hub for journalism excellence, leadership development and professional training.
She paid tribute to past NAWOJ leaders for laying the foundation for the association’s growth and appealed to governments, development partners and corporate organisations to support the construction of the national secretariat.
The maiden WINSEC summit brought together top government officials, security chiefs, diplomats, traditional rulers, civil society groups and media professionals, with participants describing the initiative as a significant platform for promoting inclusive security, recognising excellence and strengthening partnerships for national development.
