Adama Bags Cash Reward As Nigeria’s Swimming Breakthrough Sparks Fresh Hope
Nigeria’s emergence as a rising force in international swimming has received another boost after sports philanthropist Joseph Odobeatu, popularly known as Ojez, rewarded teenage sensation Abduljabar Adama with 300 dollars for his historic performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Ojez, the South-East representative on the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF) board, joined federation president Lekan Fatodu in welcoming Team Nigeria’s swimmers home, describing their performances as a turning point for aquatic sports in the country.
The 17-year-old Adama became the first Nigerian swimmer to qualify for a Commonwealth Games final after reaching the men’s 50m butterfly final, where he finished fourth, narrowly missing a medal.
Ojez said Adama’s achievement should inspire greater investment in grassroots swimming, while also commending fellow swimmers Clinton Opute, Collins Ebinga and Dorcas Oka for their determination.
He praised the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for supporting the team’s preparations and pledged continued backing for talent development.
