IGP Disu Cracks Down On Illegal Detention, Warns CPs Against Abuse Of Office

Public trust in the police begins with how officers treat the people they serve. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has issued a stern warning to Commissioners of Police nationwide, declaring that illegal detention, abuse of office, extortion and other forms of misconduct will not be tolerated.
Speaking at a meeting with Police Strategic Managers in Abuja, Disu said commissioners must lead with integrity, professionalism and respect for human rights, stressing that effective policing depends on accountability and public confidence.
He reminded the senior officers that leadership is defined not by authority but by the standards they uphold and the trust they inspire, urging them to ensure operational readiness while enforcing discipline and due process.
The IGP also directed commissioners to deepen community policing by working closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth, women and other community stakeholders, describing public partnership as the cornerstone of crime prevention.
He added that modern policing requires leaders who combine operational competence with sound judgment, emotional intelligence and effective communication.
