EU Disowns Fake West Africa Compensation Scheme, Warns Public Against Scammers
The European Union has distanced itself from a fraudulent compensation scheme targeting people with claims of trapped funds in West African banks, warning that the scam falsely exploits the names of senior EU officials to deceive victims.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS said a fake document circulating online falsely claimed that the EU and the World Bank had launched a recovery programme to compensate individuals whose funds were allegedly trapped in banks across West Africa.
The delegation described the purported programme as entirely false, stressing that the European Union has no knowledge of or involvement in such an initiative.
It also revealed that the email addresses and telephone numbers attributed to the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union, Thérèse Blanchet, and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS were fake and created by fraudsters.
The EU urged members of the public to ignore the fraudulent claims and rely only on its official website and verified social media platforms for authentic information.
