International development partners are stepping up efforts to move conflict-affected communities in Northeast Nigeria beyond humanitarian assistance towards long-term recovery, economic resilience and sustainable development.
A joint delegation of the European Union, Embassy of Switzerland, French Development Agency (AFD), GIZ, United Nations agencies and other partners has concluded a technical visit to Yobe State to assess donor-funded projects and strengthen collaboration with the government and local communities.
The delegation visited communities and project sites in Maisandari and Sumsumma, where interventions are supporting internally displaced persons and host communities through livelihoods, healthcare, education, peacebuilding and climate resilience programmes.
The team also assessed a proposed site for an integrated settlement for displaced persons and host communities under the EU-funded Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria programme.
Speaking during the visit, Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Massimo De Luca, said coordinated and locally driven interventions were crucial to connecting livelihoods, basic services, peacebuilding and sustainable resource management.
The delegation also participated in the launch workshop of the RESILAC 2 project and held discussions on sustainable water resource management and economic recovery.
Yobe State Government welcomed the interventions, stressing that lasting solutions to displacement and humanitarian challenges require government leadership, community participation and sustained international partnerships.
The visit ended with partners agreeing on priorities and measures to strengthen the impact and sustainability of ongoing programmes across the state.
