Troops Repel Terrorist Ambush In Sokoto, Hunt Intensifies For Fleeing Insurgents
Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign continues to exact a heavy price, even as troops record fresh operational successes against armed groups in the North-West.
Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled a coordinated terrorist attack during an operation in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing or dispersing the attackers before coming under a retaliatory ambush.
Military sources said troops of the 8 Division, deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Tidibale, acted on credible intelligence on terrorist activities in Tagirke Village at about 10 p.m. on 30 June.
The soldiers engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to abandon their positions and flee.
However, while withdrawing after the successful operation, the troops ran into a carefully planned ambush by the fleeing insurgents.
During the exchange of fire, a military gun truck struck an improvised explosive device (IED), killing two soldiers and leaving three others injured.
The fallen personnel were evacuated to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) morgue in Sokoto, while the injured soldiers are receiving treatment at the 8 Division Medical Services and Hospital.
The damaged gun truck has since been recovered.
Military sources said troops have intensified operations to track down the fleeing terrorists, recover missing weapons and sustain pressure on criminal elements operating in the area as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace across the North-West.
