For many, the missing link is not ability but strategic positioning, a gap Oru Media and Associates aims to bridge through a new collaboration with Rein Karate Academy.
The two organisations have begun discussions on building a sustainable sports business model designed to unlock sponsorship opportunities, attract investment and strengthen institutional growth within Nigeria’s martial arts ecosystem.
The maiden engagement focused on leveraging media, branding and strategic partnerships to position karate as a commercially viable and professionally structured sport capable of competing for corporate support.
Chief Executive Officer of Oru Media and Associates, Mr Oru Leonard Oru (FRPA, NIM), said sustainable growth in sports requires focus, structure and deliberate brand positioning.
He advised Rein Karate Academy to consolidate its strengths in karate before expanding into other combat sports, stressing that enduring brands are built on a clear identity and excellence within a niche.
Mr Oru also encouraged the academy to engage relevant Mixed Martial Arts governing bodies and training institutions to strengthen technical capacity and create professional development pathways.
According to him, modern sports extend beyond competition, demanding strategic partnerships, athlete welfare systems and robust institutional frameworks capable of attracting sponsors and investors.
He further recommended collaborations with established stakeholders in the martial arts ecosystem to improve visibility, expand access to quality training and enhance industry credibility.
Highlighting athlete welfare as a key component of sustainable sports management, Mr Oru urged the academy to enrol members in basic health insurance schemes, noting that protecting athletes improves performance while making sports organisations more attractive to sponsors and development partners.
“Sports is becoming a business ecosystem where visibility, structure, partnerships and athlete protection matter as much as talent,” he said, adding that effective media positioning and stakeholder engagement remain essential to unlocking long-term growth.
A Director of Black Belt College, Shinandai Ehisuoria Noah Akhimien, acknowledged the enormous economic potential within the sports sector but said many grassroots organisations struggle to identify and access available opportunities.
He noted that while talent and ambition abound, many sports institutions lack the networks, visibility and strategic communication required to attract funding and engage key decision-makers.
Shinandai Akhimien expressed confidence that Oru Media and Associates’ expertise in media marketing and strategic business development would help Rein Karate Academy connect with sponsors, policymakers and industry leaders capable of accelerating its growth.
He also appealed for support in securing sponsorships, partnerships and broader industry engagement that would transform the academy from a training platform into a commercially sustainable sports brand.
Both organisations concluded the meeting with optimism that stronger collaboration between sports institutions and media marketing firms would create fresh opportunities for athlete development, sponsorship acquisition and long-term growth across Nigeria’s evolving sports economy.
