NUJ FCT Backs CHRICED’s ‘Make It Count’ Initiative To Strengthen Independent Media
As concerns grow over shrinking civic space and the spread of misinformation, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting independent journalism and promoting ethical, rights-based reporting.
The Council made the pledge during the launch of CHRICED’s Make It Count initiative in Abuja, a project implemented by CHRICED Radio and TV in partnership with Weltfilme, Germany, and supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Representing NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, Mr Kenneth Olajide described independent journalism as indispensable to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly ahead of the country’s next electoral cycle.
He said the Council’s advocacy for press freedom and journalists’ welfare aligns with the project’s goal of strengthening ethical and human rights-focused reporting.
CHRICED Executive Director, Dr Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, said the initiative was designed to address increasing threats to media freedom, including intimidation of journalists and misinformation, by equipping grassroots media practitioners with skills to produce ethical multimedia content that promotes civic engagement.
Representatives of Weltfilme, the National Human Rights Commission, disability advocates and other civil society groups also stressed the need for an inclusive media landscape that amplifies marginalised voices and upholds truth, justice and human dignity.
