Trafficking Fight Suffers As Poor Data Masks True Scale Of Crime – NACTAL

Efforts to tackle human trafficking in Nigeria are being weakened by poor and inconsistent data reporting, the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL) has warned.

To address the challenge, NACTAL has commenced a three-day training in Keffi, Nasarawa State, for members across the country on the use of national monitoring, evaluation and reporting tools for trafficking cases.

NACTAL National President, Abdul Ganiyo Abubakar, said weak documentation continues to limit understanding of the true scale of trafficking despite the presence of civil society organisations across Nigeria and West Africa.

He stressed the need for stronger community engagement and better reporting to support evidence-based action.

Speaking at the training, FIAP Deputy Team Lead, Javier Francesco Leon, said accurate documentation is critical to combating trafficking, noting that interventions that are not recorded risk being excluded from national response systems.

Participants said the workshop would improve data consistency, strengthen coordination among stakeholders and ensure civil society contributions are better reflected in national and international anti-trafficking reports.
