FG To Receive 268 Nigerians Evacuated From South Africa Amid Xenophobic Attacks

As concerns grow over the safety of Nigerians caught up in renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the Federal Government has concluded arrangements to receive the first batch of 268 returnees expected in Lagos on Thursday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the evacuation flight, operated by Air Peace Airlines, is scheduled to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 5:00 a.m. on June 11, with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, set to receive the returnees on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria in Pretoria, Ambassador Alexander Ajayi, will escort the evacuees from South Africa and formally hand them over to the minister upon arrival.

The ministry also announced the extension of the ongoing screening exercise for Nigerians willing to return home voluntarily, moving the deadline to June 14 to accommodate more affected citizens.

It stated that the move reflects the government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad and ensuring those impacted by crises receive adequate support, dignity and care.

The Federal Government further assured that relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies have put in place comprehensive arrangements for the reception, documentation and reintegration of the returnees.
