Kainji Power Expansion Gains Momentum As TCN Approves Construction Of New 220MW Transmission Bays
Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen electricity generation and improve power supply received a significant boost as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has granted Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) access to commence the construction of two new 330kV transmission bays at the Kainji Transmission Substation in Niger State.
The site handover, conducted on 5 June 2026, marks a crucial step towards evacuating an additional 220 megawatts of electricity into the national grid from two new turbines being installed at the Kainji Hydro Power Plant.
According to TCN, the project involves the construction of two 330kV bays for Units IG3 and IG4, each designed to evacuate 110MW of generated power.
The bays will support civil, electrical and mechanical works, including testing and commissioning activities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chairman of the Project Technical Committee and General Manager, Materials Control and Stores, Engr. Abdulkadir Gwaram Adamu, described the development as a critical milestone that would enable TCN to transmit power generated by the new turbines into the national grid upon completion.
He commended Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited for its commitment to improving electricity supply, noting that the project is being fully financed and executed by MESL at no cost to TCN.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
Responding, the Chief Technical Officer of MESL, Engr. Cleber Romao Grisi, thanked TCN for granting site access and assured stakeholders that the company would deliver the project within the agreed timeline.
Other officials present at the ceremony included TCN’s General Manager, Business Development, Engr. Robert Bodam; General Manager, Transmission Shiroro Region, Engr. Kabiru Suleiman; Assistant General Manager, System Electrical, Engr. Ebenezer Opadare; and Principal Manager, Transmission Kainji Work Centre, Engr. Gbenga Akorede.
