Nigeria, Bangladesh Deepen Partnership On Energy, Trade and Security
As nations increasingly seek stronger economic and strategic alliances to navigate global uncertainties, Nigeria and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in key sectors including energy, trade, security and industrial development.
The commitment was reiterated on Wednesday in Abuja when the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Miah Md. Mainul Kabir.
During the meeting, both sides discussed a broad range of bilateral and international issues, including the election of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, as President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Nigeria congratulated Bangladesh on the achievement and pledged support for its upcoming tenure while reaffirming collaboration on South-South cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals.
A major highlight of the discussions was Bangladesh’s plan to import petroleum and gas products from Nigeria.
The Bangladeshi envoy disclosed that efforts were underway to finalise a Memorandum of Understanding on energy cooperation, describing Nigeria as a strategic partner in the country’s drive to diversify its energy sources.
Ambassador Ahmed also invited Bangladeshi investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s mining, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and ICT sectors,
while expressing interest in partnering with Bangladesh to revive Nigeria’s textile industry as a means of boosting industrial growth and creating jobs for young people.
On security, both countries explored opportunities for enhanced military and intelligence cooperation to address terrorism and other shared threats.
Nigeria also sought Bangladesh’s support for its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2030–2031 term.
The two countries agreed to finalise arrangements for the inaugural session of their bilateral consultation mechanism aimed at strengthening regular high-level engagement and advancing mutually beneficial cooperation.
