NUJ FCT, Police Pensions Unite Against Pension Misinformation In Nigeria
As public distrust and misinformation continue to trail pension administration in Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council and Nigeria Police Pensions Limited have pledged a stronger media partnership to promote transparency and improve public understanding of police pensions.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by journalists to the headquarters of Nigeria Police Pensions Limited in Abuja, NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike described the media as a vital force for accountability and democratic engagement.
She said closer collaboration between journalists and pension administrators would help ensure retired police officers receive fair treatment and dignity while also tackling false narratives surrounding pension management.
Ike expressed concern over ongoing complaints and protests by retired police personnel over pension payments, noting that the union would continue to advocate workers’ welfare and responsible pension administration.
Responding, Managing Director of Nigeria Police Pensions Limited, Muhammed Dutse said the organisation remained committed to transparency and lawful operations, stressing that many Nigerians still lacked proper understanding of the contributory pension scheme.
He appealed to journalists to support fact-based reporting and public enlightenment, especially on sensitive pension matters affecting retired police officers.
The organisation’s Secretary and Legal Adviser also explained that the pension firm was created specifically to manage the pensions of serving and retired police personnel, adding that efforts were ongoing to improve benefits and address concerns raised by retirees.
Both organisations agreed to deepen cooperation in media advocacy, public education and accountability in pension administration.
