TCN, NSCDC Clamp Down On Illegal Activities Beneath Power Lines In Osun
Amid growing concerns over threats to critical national infrastructure, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have intensified efforts to clear illegal structures and activities encroaching on high-voltage transmission corridors in Osun State.
The joint enforcement operation, carried out by TCN’s Osogbo Region alongside NSCDC operatives from the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department, targeted unlawful occupations beneath 330kV and 132kV transmission lines.
Leading the exercise, TCN’s Principal Manager, System Lines, Engr. Gbenga Akeju, said the operation was aimed at enforcing mandatory safety clearances of 25 metres on both sides of 330kV lines and 15 metres on both sides of 132kV lines, as stipulated by national regulations.
Areas affected by the crackdown included sections of the Osogbo-Ikeja West and Osogbo-Ayede 330kV transmission routes, as well as the Osogbo-Ede 132kV line around Oke-Onti and Hallelujah communities in Olurunda Local Government Area.
During the exercise, several violators were arrested for questioning, while others were directed to provide credible sureties and sworn court undertakings to vacate the corridors within a specified period.
Engr. Akeju warned that illegal trading, construction, and other activities beneath transmission lines expose residents to dangers such as electrocution, fire outbreaks, vandalism, and power disruptions capable of affecting electricity supply nationwide.
He also praised the NSCDC for its continued partnership in protecting critical infrastructure, adding that similar enforcement and public sensitisation exercises would continue across the region.
