Anambra Police Recover Heavy Weapons, Explosives In Major Crackdown On Criminal Camp
In a renewed push against violent crime and armed separatist activities in Anambra State, police operatives have uncovered a cache of sophisticated weapons and explosive devices during a major clearance operation in Owerre-Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government Area.
The operation was carried out by the Inspector General of Police’s Violent Crime Response Unit under the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, led by CSP Orebe Chidubem Mathew, following intelligence obtained from a suspect already in custody identified as 37-year-old Nnamdi Nkemdilim Ogbonna, alleged to be a top commander of a proscribed secessionist group.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the raid led to the recovery of a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) loaded with about 2,000 rounds of live chain ammunition, two fabricated rocket launchers with 25 propellers, ten locally made Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a locally made Beretta pistol, two pump-action guns, three hand grenades, and several rounds of live ammunition.
Police also recovered a gas cylinder and a black Ecolac box from the camp, which had earlier been destroyed by a Joint Security Team.
The Command disclosed that intelligence reports indicated attempts by fleeing gang members to regroup in the area before the latest offensive forced them into retreat after a fierce gun duel. Some suspects reportedly escaped with varying degrees of bullet injuries.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect confessed to involvement in multiple attacks across the state, including assaults on police facilities, killings of security personnel, attacks on government institutions, and the murder of officers on stop-and-search operations.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said the establishment of the Violent Crime Response Unit has strengthened the Command’s resolve to sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements threatening peace and security in the state.
