May Day: NUJ FCT Chair Warns Insecurity, Poverty Threaten Decent Work
As Nigerian workers mark the 2026 May Day celebration amid worsening economic hardship and security concerns, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for urgent action to protect workers and restore dignity to labour.
In a statement to commemorate Workers’ Day, Ike described this year’s theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as a true reflection of the harsh realities facing workers, especially journalists operating under difficult and risky conditions.
She praised journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for remaining resilient and committed to ethical reporting despite growing threats to safety and increasing economic pressures.
The NUJ FCT chairman urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity and implement policies that would ease poverty and improve workers’ welfare.
Ike also challenged media organisations to prioritise fair remuneration, improved working conditions, insurance coverage, and professional development for journalists, stressing that motivated workers are essential to national progress.
She further called for stronger solidarity within the union and encouraged journalists to continue using their platforms to amplify issues affecting workers and society.
