In a period where operational readiness remains crucial to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, the Nigerian Army has reinforced the importance of discipline, endurance and teamwork through its annual inter-brigade competition for junior personnel.

The 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, has emerged overall champion of the 2026 2 Division Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition held at the Nigerian Army Cantonment, Ekehuan, in Benin City, Edo State.

The four-day competition, which ran from April 20 to 23, brought together participating formations including 12 Brigade, 22 Armoured Brigade, 32 Artillery Brigade, 42 Engineers Brigade and 2 Division Garrison.

Speaking during the event, Commander of 4 Brigade, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, said the exercise was designed to sharpen combat proficiency, leadership capacity, organisational ability and teamwork among soldiers of junior ranks.

He stressed that the competition was beyond winning trophies, noting that it served as a platform for unity, resilience and professional growth.

“It provides a platform for sharing knowledge, learning from one another, and building stronger bonds within our ranks,” he said.

At the close of the competition, 12 Brigade finished in second place, while 2 Division Garrison secured third position.

The Special Guest of Honour and Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport, Major General Adebayo Adegbite, said the competition had successfully enhanced the physical and mental capacity of participants while preparing them for real operational engagements.

He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for prioritising the development of junior non-commissioned officers, describing them as the backbone of the Nigerian Army.

Events featured during the competition included drill contests, combat swimming, map reading, weapon handling and firing, combat cross-country race, and obstacle crossing.

The ceremony attracted heads of security agencies in Edo State, friends of the Brigade, and featured award presentations, souvenirs and group photographs.
