Nigeria Takes Centre Stage As WHO Convenes Landmark Health Diplomacy Dialogue In Abuja

In an era where diseases transcend borders and diplomacy shapes health outcomes, Nigeria is positioning itself at the heart of global health conversations.

The World Health Organization Country Office in Nigeria has convened its inaugural Health Diplomacy Dialogue with Ambassadors and Heads of Mission in Abuja, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between health and foreign policy actors.

The high-level meeting created a platform for strategic engagement, fostering shared understanding and coordinated responses to evolving health challenges increasingly influenced by global and geopolitical dynamics.

Participants reflected on Nigeria’s health journey, highlighting notable progress, persistent complexities, and its growing global relevance. Discussions centred on advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), strengthening primary health care systems, tackling the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and reinforcing health security in an interconnected world.

The dialogue comes at a critical time as preparations intensify for the 79th World Health Assembly.

It also aligns with Nigeria’s emerging leadership role in global health, particularly as the country prepares to host the 5th High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Abuja.

Stakeholders say the initiative signals a renewed commitment to leveraging diplomacy as a tool for better health outcomes, while positioning Nigeria as a key player in shaping global health policies.
