NAWOJ, NOA Move To Tackle Misinformation, Boost Electoral Awareness
In a period when public trust in democratic institutions is being tested, stronger civic education and credible information have become more important than ever.
It is against this backdrop that the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has sought to deepen its collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to promote electoral awareness and responsible citizen participation.
During a courtesy visit to the NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in Abuja on Friday, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, said the association was proposing a strategic partnership to improve public understanding of elections and governance.
She stressed that elections should not merely be periodic exercises but processes that citizens understand, trust and actively engage in.
Aisha Ibrahim said the proposed partnership would focus on training journalists and community mobilisers, expanding voter education, tackling misinformation and disinformation, promoting peaceful participation, and producing civic education materials in local languages.
She also called for greater inclusion of women, young people and marginalised groups in governance, insisting that representation should be seen as a right rather than a privilege.
In his response, NOA Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, described NAWOJ as a valuable partner in national development, praising its long-standing contributions to responsible journalism, civic education and gender advocacy.
He said the proposed collaboration was timely, especially as Nigeria seeks to deepen democratic participation and address growing concerns around fake news and civic disengagement.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to promoting national unity, responsible communication and a more informed citizenry.
The development was disclosed in a statement by NAWOJ National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan.
