Police Dismiss Viral Abuja Terror Claim, Arrest Suspect Over False Alarm

At a time when misinformation can spread faster than facts, Nigeria’s security agencies are warning against the dangerous consequences of false panic.

The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a viral video claiming a terrorist attack was underway in Abuja, describing it as entirely fabricated.

In a statement issued on Friday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said there was no terrorist incident in the Federal Capital Territory, contrary to claims made in the widely circulated video.

According to the police, preliminary investigations showed that the video was deliberately put together using misleading footage sourced online to create a false narrative capable of causing fear, panic and distrust in the country’s security system.

The police said operatives have arrested one Pam Joseph in connection with the creation and spread of the false content.

The arrest, the Force said, followed credible intelligence and digital forensic investigations which linked the suspect to the origin and circulation of the video.

Police warned that while citizens have the right to free expression, such freedom does not include spreading false information that could threaten public peace and national security.

The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.

The Force also urged members of the public to verify information before sharing and avoid content capable of inciting fear or disorder.
