Tinubu Moves To Seal Sahel Threat Gap As Talks With Chad Intensify

In a region where borders are increasingly meaningless to armed groups, Nigeria is turning to diplomacy as a frontline weapon against rising insecurity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has opened high-level consultations with Mahamat Idriss Déby, in a strategic move to curb cross-border attacks ravaging Nigeria’s northeast.

The development was disclosed in Abuja by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who said the engagement reflects a broader regional push to confront the growing threat of armed groups operating across the Sahel.

“As we speak, the president is engaging with the president of Chad,” Idris revealed, stressing that terrorism and cross-border crimes can no longer be tackled in isolation.

The talks come amid renewed violence in northern Nigeria, including unrest in Jos that has left several dead and properties destroyed, further underscoring the urgency for coordinated regional security.

Idris reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and religious freedom, dismissing narratives of religious bias and emphasising Nigeria’s multi-faith identity.

He added that Tinubu has also been in consultations with security chiefs and Plateau State authorities to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

Security analysts say Nigeria’s engagement with neighbouring countries like Chad could prove decisive in dismantling the transnational networks fuelling violence in the region.
