Nigeria, Mexico Deepen Strategic Ties As Minister Pushes Tourism Partnership

In an era where diplomacy is increasingly driven by economic and cultural collaboration, Nigeria and Mexico are moving to strengthen ties through renewed engagement at the highest levels.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has disclosed plans for an exchange of ministerial visits between both countries as part of efforts to deepen bilateral relations and unlock new opportunities.

The minister made this known during a valedictory meeting with Mexico’s outgoing Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, who recently concluded his diplomatic tour.

Central to the discussions was Nigeria’s interest in leveraging Mexico’s expertise in tourism and cultural development.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu noted that both nations share strong cultural values and family-oriented traditions, stressing that Nigeria stands to gain significantly from Mexico’s experience in tourism expansion.

“We have a lot to learn from Mexico in tourism and cultural exchange. There is so much we share, and we must expand these areas,” she said.

She commended Ambassador Ortiz for his impactful tenure, highlighting milestones such as the establishment of the Nigerian-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and the inauguration of a Mexican honorary consulate in Lagos, key steps that have strengthened economic cooperation and trade diversification.

The envoy, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its support over the past four years, noting that diplomatic relations between both countries, which span five decades, had witnessed significant growth.

He pointed to enhanced agricultural collaboration, particularly under the SENASICA-NAQS framework, which boosted Nigeria’s hibiscus exports to Mexico.

He also described Nigeria as a strong regional force within the Economic Community of West African States and a respected voice on the global stage.

Ambassador Ortiz further praised recent diplomatic strides by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including his state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a testament to Nigeria’s rising global relevance.

Looking ahead, both countries signalled readiness to broaden cooperation into emerging sectors such as manufacturing, mining, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy.

With renewed commitments on both sides, Nigeria and Mexico appear set to elevate their partnership beyond diplomacy into a more robust economic and cultural alliance.
