Nigeria Strengthens Global Human Rights and Investment Ties In High-Level Talks With European Delegation
At a time when global diplomacy is increasingly shaped by shared values and strategic partnerships, Nigeria is reinforcing its commitment to human rights, peaceful coexistence, and international collaboration.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed this stance during a high-level meeting with a delegation from the First Step Forum (FSF), a global network of parliamentarians, diplomats, and civil society actors.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received the delegation on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
Leading the delegation, FSF Executive Director Marc Jost described the visit as a strategic opportunity to deepen engagement with Nigeria across key sectors, including security, human rights, and economic development.
He noted that the forum remains committed to fostering dialogue, religious freedom, and peaceful coexistence globally.
Discussions during the meeting also focused on strengthening Nigeria-Europe relations, with the delegation expressing interest in understanding Nigeria’s governance structure, foreign policy direction, and efforts to create a more attractive environment for foreign investment.
In response, Ambassador Ahmed highlighted Nigeria’s foreign policy anchored on the “4-Ds”, Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora, while reaffirming the country’s leadership role in promoting regional stability through ECOWAS and the African Union.
He also underscored Nigeria’s economic diplomacy drive, pointing to ongoing efforts to attract foreign direct investment and maximise opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Significantly, both parties explored the possibility of establishing a formal cooperation framework between the First Step Forum and Nigeria’s National Assembly, aimed at strengthening legislative collaboration and institutional capacity.
A statement signed by the spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abuja, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing optimism about deepening bilateral and multilateral ties, as well as expanding future engagements across different parts of Nigeria.
