10 Lives Lost in Avoidable Niger Crash as FRSC Cracks Down on Speeding and Illegal Passenger Transport

In Nigeria, many road crashes are not accidents but consequences of preventable choices, a reality once again underscored by a tragic incident in Niger State.

Ten people have been confirmed dead following a fatal crash along the Tafa’Gujeni route at Malam Tanko on Monday morning.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident, which occurred around 8:20am, involved a DAF tanker carrying 33 male occupants.

According to preliminary findings, excessive speeding led to loss of control, triggering the deadly crash. Even more alarming, the vehicle was reportedly engaged in illegal mixed loading, transporting both goods and passengers, a practice long condemned by safety authorities.

While ten victims died, 20 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, and three escaped unhurt. FRSC operatives who responded to the scene rescued 23 survivors and swiftly cleared the road to restore traffic flow.

The injured were taken to Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse, while the deceased were deposited at the mortuary.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the crash as both “avoidable and deeply painful,” stressing that disregard for traffic regulations continues to cost lives unnecessarily.

He warned that the Corps will intensify enforcement against speeding and the dangerous trend of mixed loading, urging drivers and transport operators to prioritise safety over profit.

The FRSC also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while reminding the public that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
