Eid Celebration: INEC Boss Charges Staff On Discipline Ahead Of Ekiti, Osun Polls

In Nigeria’s fragile democratic space, moments of spiritual reflection are increasingly being framed as opportunities for institutional reset, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) appears determined not to miss that moment.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has urged staff and Nigerians to carry forward the discipline, patience, and integrity cultivated during Ramadan into the nation’s electoral processes, particularly as preparations intensify for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.

In his Eid-el-Fitr message released on March 20, 2026, Amupitan described the end of Ramadan as a triumph of self-restraint and moral renewal, stressing that such values are critical to rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.

He noted the symbolic overlap of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season this year, describing it as a powerful reminder of unity and shared responsibility among Nigerians of different faiths.

“The lessons of Ramadan, patience, integrity, and empathy, are the very virtues we require as we approach critical electoral milestones,” he said.

With over 14,000 personnel deployed across the country’s 774 local government areas, the INEC Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to staff welfare, while insisting that professionalism and zero tolerance for misconduct must remain non-negotiable.

Amupitan also positioned the upcoming Ekiti and Osun governorship elections as a decisive test run ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially under the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which strengthens the use of technology such as BVAS and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Since assuming office in October 2025, he said the Commission has intensified efforts to modernise its operations, restore institutional credibility, and insulate the system from political interference.

As Nigeria inches closer to another electoral cycle, INEC’s message is clear: discipline within must translate to credibility without.
