The passing of one of Nigeria’s most influential football minds, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, has drawn tributes from across the country, with the Federal Character Commission describing his death as a huge loss to Nigerian sport.

Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Omidiran, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the respected football tactician, who died on March 9, 2026, at the age of 88.

In a statement, Omidiran described Onigbinde as a trailblazer and mentor whose decades-long contributions helped shape Nigerian football and inspire generations of players and coaches.

She highlighted his historic achievement as the first indigenous coach to lead the Super Eagles to the FIFA World Cup, noting that his leadership expanded opportunities for Nigerian coaches and strengthened the country’s football identity.

“Chief Onigbinde’s life was marked by unwavering commitment to excellence, discipline and the development of our football heritage,” she said.

Omidiran, a former executive member of the Nigeria Football Federation and Secretary of the Nigeria Olympic Committee’s Board of Trustees, also reflected on her personal connection with the late coach, describing him as a proud Osun patriot who dedicated his life to nurturing young talents and promoting professionalism in the sport.

Onigbinde, fondly known in football circles for his tactical brilliance, coached the Super Eagles at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea and also led Nigeria to a runners-up finish at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations.

Omidiran extended condolences to his family, former players and the entire Nigerian football community, praying for comfort for all those mourning the legendary coach.
