Rising Gulf Tensions: ECOWAS Warns Of Global Fallout, Urges Urgent Diplomacy

As conflict deepens in the Gulf region, West Africa is watching closely, and speaking out.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over the escalating hostilities, warning that the intensification of military action could trigger far-reaching consequences beyond the Middle East.

In a statement issued from Abuja on 28 February 2026, the regional bloc, under the chairmanship of Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, aligned itself with the position of the African Union Commission, which has also raised alarm over the deteriorating situation.

ECOWAS cautioned that further escalation risks widening instability, with serious implications for international peace and security.

The bloc specifically highlighted potential disruptions to global energy markets, trade routes and food supply chains, vulnerabilities that could hit Africa and other fragile regions hardest.

Calling for “maximum restraint,” ECOWAS urged all parties involved to act in strict compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law, particularly respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

The protection of civilian lives and critical infrastructure, it stressed, must remain paramount.

The West African body further appealed for renewed diplomatic engagement within established international and regional frameworks to de-escalate tensions and restore stability.

Reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism and peaceful conflict resolution, ECOWAS underscored West Africa’s support for coordinated global efforts to prevent a broader crisis.
