PCRC Hails Egbetokun’s Police Reforms, Backs Disu To Deepen Community Policing Drive
As leadership changes at the top of Nigeria’s Police Force often signal either continuity or a clean break, the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) is betting on continuity, and momentum.
The PCRC has applauded the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Dr Olukayode Egbetokun, for what it described as a period of meaningful reforms, stronger intelligence-led policing and renewed community trust, while throwing its weight behind Acting IGP, AIG Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to deepen those gains.
Speaking on behalf of PCRC members in Nigeria and the diaspora, the Committee’s National Chairman, Alhaji Ibraheem Mogaji Olaniyan, said Egbetokun’s tenure strengthened collaboration between the police and communities, improved coordinated responses to violent crime and insurgency, and boosted officer welfare through initiatives such as police awards, barracks rehabilitation and improved infrastructure.
A statement signed by the Director, Global Communications and Media Relations, Police Community Relations Committee (P CRC), Olayemi Esan, highlighted the adoption of strategic policing approaches, the establishment of the Police Special Intervention Squad, and the rollout of nationwide contact centres for real-time reporting and rapid response as key milestones that helped curb kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes, even as some officers paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
The PCRC also credited Egbetokun with restoring public confidence through community policing initiatives, including the “If you see something, say something” campaign, and for strengthening the Committee’s role in grassroots intelligence, youth and women inclusion, and securing a national secretariat site in Abuja.
Welcoming Acting IGP Disu, Olaniyan described his appointment as a reward for grassroots intelligence and community policing, expressing confidence that the new police chief will sustain reforms, expand community partnerships and entrench intelligence-driven operations in line with global best practice.
The PCRC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Police Force to improve public safety, rebuild trust and strengthen national security.
