US Treasury Envoy Heads To Nigeria To Tighten Screws On Terrorist Financing

At a time when extremist violence continues to threaten vulnerable communities, Nigeria is set to host a high-level United States delegation aimed at cutting off the financial lifelines that fuel terror.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing, Jonathan Burke, will visit Nigeria on 23-24 February to deepen cooperation with the Federal Government on countering terrorist financing.

The visit forms part of the Trump Administration’s efforts to curb violence against Christians and other at-risk groups, as well as to strengthen global security partnerships.

During his stay, Burke is expected to hold talks with senior government officials and engage private sector stakeholders, including players in the financial industry.

The discussions will focus on identifying vulnerabilities within Nigeria’s financial system that may be exploited by terrorist networks, and on practical steps to tighten safeguards, improve intelligence-sharing, and strengthen regulatory compliance.

Security experts say disrupting funding channels is one of the most effective ways to weaken extremist groups, as it limits their ability to recruit, procure weapons and sustain operations.

Nigeria, which continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry and kidnapping in parts of the country, has faced repeated calls to strengthen financial oversight and cross-border cooperation to stem illicit flows.

The visit is also expected to reinforce collaboration between Nigerian authorities and international partners on tracking suspicious transactions, enforcing sanctions, and building institutional capacity to detect and prevent terror financing.
