Amasiri Under Siege? Community Alleges Military Crackdown, Humanitarian Crisis In Ebonyi
When security operations begin to choke daily life, the line between enforcement and collective punishment quickly blurs.
That is the fear gripping Amasiri community in Ebonyi State, where residents allege an escalating military presence has triggered displacement, economic paralysis and a looming humanitarian crisis.
In a statement circulated to Nigerians and the international community, the residents accused the Ebonyi State Government of misrepresenting events in Amasiri, alleging that claims about the discovery of human remains were part of a media strategy to brand the community as violent.
They questioned the credibility of the findings, citing the absence of what they described as proper forensic verification, and warned that such narratives were being used to justify “brutal treatment”.
The community also alleged deception around peace efforts. According to them, government agents engaged traditional elders in a reconciliation process marked by the sharing of yellowish-green palm fronds, a sacred symbol of peace.
Residents claim that shortly after the ceremony, security operations intensified, with reported house-to-house searches, arrests and shootings, allegedly affecting even elderly residents.
Humanitarian concerns are mounting. The community says schools and healthcare facilities are shut, farmers cannot access their lands, markets are inaccessible and injured persons are unable to receive treatment.
They warn that elderly and sick residents are dying without care.
These claims remain unverified, and no detailed official response has addressed the humanitarian allegations as of press time.
Adding to the anger, residents allege that quarry operations in the area continue despite the security lockdown, fuelling accusations that extractive activities are being prioritised while locals bear the brunt of the crackdown.
The community has called on the Federal Government, human rights groups and international observers to investigate and ensure accountability, insisting they seek justice, not sympathy.
Tensions remain high in Amasiri as residents appeal for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation.
