Anambra Means Business’: Soludo Leads Monday Market Revival In Onitsha

By Christian Aburime

After years of muted Mondays driven by fear and disruption, Anambra’s commercial engine is beginning to hum again.

In a symbolic and confidence-boosting move, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo stepped into Onitsha Main Market on a Monday, walking the stalls, speaking with traders and even shopping, signalling a firm return to normal business activity across the state.

The development follows what observers described as a historic reopening of Onitsha Main Market on Monday, when shops opened, traders returned and customers resumed transactions for the first time in over five years.

The renewed activity, according to the state government, is not a one-off gesture but the foundation of a “new normal” aimed at permanently restoring Monday trading.

In a call to action, markets across Anambra, from Nkwo Nnewi to Eke Awka, Ose and Ogbogwu, have been urged to fully reopen on Mondays, with traders encouraged to display their goods and customers to patronise businesses with confidence.

Authorities say the revival is backed by a robust security architecture involving the state police, joint task force and Agunechemba vigilantes under the Udo Ga Chi mandate, deployed as a permanent shield around markets.

The government insists the peaceful and bustling activity recorded last week demonstrates that the security environment has improved, urging residents to ignore rumours and fear-mongering.

Officials argue that sustained market reopening is vital to restoring livelihoods, reclaiming lost revenue, accelerating development projects and strengthening the state’s economy.

With Governor Soludo publicly staking his credibility on the safety of markets, the administration is calling on Ndi Anambra to sustain the momentum, insisting that every Monday reopened represents renewed hope, economic recovery and progress for families and communities across the state.
