Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Segun Ojumu Spotlight Journalism’s Sacrifices, Media Evolution

The Spokesperson of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, has hosted media executive and author, Segun Ojumu, in an engagement that underscored the critical role of documentation, evolving media practice and journalism’s place in strengthening democracy.

The meeting, held on Monday in Abuja, provided the platform for the presentation of Ojumu’s newly published book, which documents the lived experiences of journalists who have covered elections in Nigeria over several decades.

Drawing from his time as President of the INEC Press Corps, Ojumu said the publication captures first-hand accounts of reporters who braved logistical hurdles, security risks and life-threatening situations in the line of duty.

He explained that beyond chronicling personal sacrifices, the book traces the evolution of Nigeria’s electoral process, including changes in election management and voter accreditation technologies, while offering practical guidance for journalists covering elections.

Ojumu also stressed the importance of record-keeping, noting that preserved digital archives helped safeguard the nation’s media history.

Commending the author, Ebienfa described the work as an act of professional courage, noting that documenting sensitive electoral experiences demands intellectual discipline and openness to public scrutiny.

He also reflected on the rapid transformation of Nigeria’s media landscape, observing that emerging digital platforms are increasingly shaping public discourse and redefining news consumption.

The Foreign Affairs spokesperson reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to engaging with media professionals who promote ethical journalism, accountability and national development, expressing optimism for continued collaboration.
