Golf, Honour and Remembrance: Armed Forces Mark 2026 Celebration Day In Abuja

In a blend of solemn remembrance and sporting camaraderie, Nigeria’s Armed Forces turned to golf as a symbolic platform to honour fallen heroes and celebrate those still standing guard over the nation’s sovereignty.

The Defence Headquarters on Saturday, 10 January 2026, organised a Golf Kitty at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Asokoro, Abuja, as part of activities marking the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day 2026.

The event drew senior military officers and members of the golfing community, fostering unity, physical fitness and mental alertness, while reinforcing the bond within the Armed Forces family.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Defence and Special Guest of Honour, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a solemn national occasion dedicated to honouring serving personnel, veterans, wounded-in-action troops, fallen heroes and their families.

He noted that the annual commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by officers and men of the Armed Forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s peace, unity and territorial integrity.

According to him, sporting activities such as golf align with the military ethos of resilience, discipline and operational readiness, while also promoting esprit de corps.

General Musa commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his unwavering support for the military, and praised the Chief of Defence Staff for his exemplary leadership.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed appreciation to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their professionalism and sacrifices in defending the nation.

He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the military, stressing that security remains a collective responsibility requiring strong civil-military cooperation and national unity.

Additionally, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, Captain of the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, described hosting the Golf Kitty as an honour, revealing that over 100 golfers participated in the tournament.

The event featured award presentations, prizes for outstanding golfers, souvenir presentations and group photographs, rounding off a successful sporting tribute to Nigeria’s fallen and serving heroes.
