NWFL Comes Down Hard On Ibom Angels Over Uyo Violence
Violence has once again cast a shadow over Nigerian women’s football, prompting swift and decisive action from league organisers determined to protect the game’s integrity.
The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has fined Ibom Angels FC ₦2.5 million and ordered the club to play three home matches behind closed doors following crowd disturbances and the assault on Bayelsa Queens players and officials in Uyo.
The sanctions stem from the NWFL Premiership clash played on 7 January 2026 at the Uyo Township Stadium, where supporters of Ibom Angels were found to have invaded the pitch and attacked members of the visiting team.
After reviewing match officials’ reports and video evidence, the league described the incident as a grave breach of its regulations and the principles of fair play.
According to a statement signed by its Media Director, Samuel Ahmadu, the NWFL stated, Ibom Angels were fined ₦1.5 million for assault, intimidation and offensive conduct, and an additional ₦1 million for bringing the game into disrepute and failing to provide adequate security.
In addition, the club will play its next three home fixtures, against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens and Naija Ratels, without spectators.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the punishment sends a clear message that violence will not be tolerated.
She stressed that the safety of players, officials and match personnel remains non-negotiable, warning that repeat offences could attract even stiffer sanctions.
The league also cautioned that failure to comply with the imposed measures may lead to extended venue bans or further disciplinary action.
