UNESCO Condemns Abduction Of Schoolgirls In Niger State, Demands Immediate Release

In a chilling reminder of the growing danger facing learners across northern Nigeria, UNESCO has condemned the violent abduction of more than fifty schoolgirls and staff from St. Mary Catholic School, Agwara, describing the attack as a grave assault on the right to education.

The incident, which occurred overnight between 20 and 21 November 2025, saw students, teachers, and a security officer seized by armed attackers.

It comes barely days after the kidnapping of 25 girls in Kebbi State, amplifying concerns over the escalating wave of violence targeting schools.

In a statement issued on Friday, UNESCO expressed solidarity with victims, families, communities, and the Nigerian Government, stressing that schools must remain “sanctuaries of learning and peace.”

The organisation recalled the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2601 (2021), which strongly condemns attacks and threats against education facilities, children, and teachers.

UNESCO urged the immediate and unconditional release of all abducted children and personnel.

The agency warned that the repeated attacks highlight the urgent need for Nigeria to fully implement the Safe Schools Declaration, and pledged continued support to federal and state authorities to strengthen school security, expand early warning systems, and enhance protection for girls’ education especially in high-risk regions.

UNESCO reaffirmed its commitment to helping Nigeria build a resilient education system in the face of growing threats from armed groups.
