NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake Antibiotic Circulating In Nigeria
In a renewed warning about the dangers of counterfeit drugs, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert on a suspected substandard and falsified (SF) pharmaceutical product discovered in Nigeria’s drug supply chain.
The product, BETACLOX (Ampicillin 250mg and Cloxacillin 250mg), was found to bear fraudulent registration details and originate from an unverified source, raising grave concerns about its safety and efficacy.
NAFDAC cautioned that the falsified antibiotic poses serious public health risks, as it may not provide the intended therapeutic effect and could worsen antimicrobial resistance or lead to treatment failure.
The agency urged healthcare professionals, distributors, and the public to exercise vigilance, check product authenticity, and immediately report any suspicious medicines through official NAFDAC communication channels.
