SWAN @ 60: All Set For Grand Celebration Of Sports Journalism Excellence
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) is set to roll out the drums for its 60th anniversary celebration.
This landmark event promises to blend history, honour, and excellence under the theme “Celebrating Six Decades of Sports Journalism Excellence in Nigeria.”
With preparations in full gear, organisers say all logistics, from accommodation to security and feeding, have been meticulously finalised to ensure a smooth and memorable event.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, SWAN President, Mr Isaiah Benjamin, alongside the chairmen of the organising committees, confirmed that the two-day celebration will take place on October 30 and 31, 2025, in the nation’s capital.
Top dignitaries, including the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the governors of Rivers, Delta, and Plateau States, Sim Fubara, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, are expected to grace the occasion.
Also billed to attend are the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and members of the National Assembly Committees on Sports.
Benjamin disclosed that over ₦3.5 million has been committed to staging what he described as a “state-of-the-art event,” with accommodation already secured in three hotels across Abuja. “We have made arrangements for feeding, accommodation, and security. Everything is in place.
The celebration will reflect the growth, struggles, and triumphs of sports journalism in Nigeria,” he assured.
The anniversary will feature a Thanksgiving service in churches and mosques, followed by an award and investiture night to honour outstanding sportsmen, administrators, and journalists.
The Sports Merit Award (SMA), a legally recognised honour, will celebrate both serving and retired athletes, including Victor Osimhen, Tobi Amusan, Nwankwo Kanu, and Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, with some posthumous recognitions also planned.
According to the organisers, over 200 nominees will be recognised for their contributions to sports development in Nigeria, as the association partners with corporate organisations to deliver what promises to be one of the most memorable gatherings in Nigerian sports history.
