Nigeria, UK Deepen Ties On Migration, Justice and Security Cooperation

In a move that reinforces long-standing bilateral relations, Nigeria and the United Kingdom have pledged to strengthen collaboration on migration management, justice administration, and security.

The renewed commitment was announced during the annual Nigeria–UK Migration, Justice and Home Affairs Dialogue, held in Abuja.

The meeting, co-chaired by senior officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UK Home Office, built on discussions from the 2024 Dialogue in London.

Both nations reaffirmed shared goals of promoting prosperity and tackling cross-border crime while ensuring that migration processes remain safe, legal, and dignified.

Key outcomes of the dialogue included agreements to enhance cooperation on the return and reintegration of individuals without legal status, streamlining visa procedures through e-visa systems, and developing a memorandum of understanding to tackle organised immigration crime.

The two countries also pledged joint efforts to combat human trafficking, illicit finance, and serious organised crime, with Nigeria set to lead a first-of-its-kind Strategic Threat Analysis for West Africa.

In the area of counter-terrorism, the UK officially handed over its Brighter Futures Prevent Programme to Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre to sustain youth resilience initiatives.

Both countries also agreed to improve extradition processes and operationalise the Prisoner Transfer Agreement, aligning it with Nigeria’s Correctional Services Act 2019.

The dialogue concluded with both parties reaffirming their mutual accountability and commitment to deliver on agreed priorities.

The next session is scheduled to be held in the United Kingdom in 2026.
